Black Don’t Crack: Elise Neal Looks Good AF At Almost 60

Biography

Elise Neal, born March 14, 1966, in Memphis, Tennessee, grew up with a strong passion for the arts. Encouraged by her mother, Arletha Neal, who worked as a nurse, Elise began dancing at the age of six and was involved in cheerleading. After graduating from Overton High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, she attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia but left early to pursue her dream in New York City. There, she performed in musical theater and later transitioned to both film and television.

Elise Neal first appeared on tv screens as a background dance in a music video for the 1990 song “Only You” by rapper Kwamé, from his album “A Day In The Life.”

Neal’s big break came in 1997 when she appeared in three major films: Rosewood, Money Talks, and Scream 2. Then her role as Yvonne Hughley on the sitcom The Hughleys (1998–2002) brought her further recognition, earning her two NAACP Image Award nominations.

Later Elise Neal played Tia Jewel on All of Us, a role that many fans loved. However, her experience behind the scenes was far from ideal. In 2005, Neal decided to leave the show, citing both the unhappiness she felt on set due to the tension between Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and a significant salary cut after budget reductions.

Hollywood Life reports,

Elise Neal says she quit the sitcom All of Us due to Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith‘s contagious “unhappy” behavior, which led to her being treated “unfairly” on set. Elise, 54, starred in All of Us — a show that was inspired by Will and Jada’s relationship — as “Tia Jewel” from 2003 until her departure in 2005. The show was created and executive produced by both Will, 51, and Jada, 48, and aired from 2003 to 2007 before it was cancelled.

Elise phoned into a virtual interview with Viral Hip Hop News, where she explained that Will and Jada would bring their relationship unhappiness to work, which spread to everyone around them. “Now that’s rough for me,” Elise replied when asked about the recent headlines about Will and Jada’s marriage — following artist August Alsina‘s claim that he had a romantic relationship with Jada during her marriage with Will. Alsina also alleged that Will gave him permission to pursue Jada.

“Everyone knows I was on the ‘All Of Us,’ set, right?” Elisa asked the hosts. “But here’s what I can say, feeling like something is going to pop me upside the head and come out of the blue. If someone is unhappy, they spread that unhappiness to others. I wasn’t happy on that set because people treated me in a way that I could tell that they were unhappy,’ she admitted.

“Bottom line is, they decided what their marriage is going to be. They have decided that a long time ago. I’m not involved in their marriage,” Elise said, explaining that Will and Jada “know what’s going on in their marriage. If they decide that they’re going to come together and that’s the type of marriage that they want and they’re okay with that, we are not able to judge that. What I am going to judge is if I come to work for people and they bring that unhappiness on others, like myself. I felt that and received that on that set. And that’s sad to me,” she explained.

Elise continued, “I am a very hardworking girl. I had just come from doing a successful show for four years with ‘The Hughleys.’ I’ve done tons of movies… a whole lot of stuff before I did that set. I’m coming to that set to work and excited because I’m like, ‘Ayyyee, I’m about to do something with — these people are cool, these people are great. It’s going to be a great, fun environment. I’ve never worked in an environment with these two great individuals.”

The actress went on to admit that she’s got nothing but love for Will, despite her tumultuous time on the set of All of Us. “And I know Will and I love Will. I love Will as an individual. I don’t know a lot about him personally,” she said. “I just know I worked with him and I enjoyed working with him. So I was looking forward to having a very fun work experience. And I’m still sad that it was so not like that.”

“Let’s be clear, I’m talking about that individual set. I have a lot of fun on other sets, okay? I’ve had a lot of fun on a lot of jobs that I’ve done. And a lot of people know that I exited that set early,” Elise said of her departure from the sitcom in 2005. “I’m going to be happy to say yeah, I miss the money but I didn’t miss coming to work not happy. I was not happy because they were not happy. And I wasn’t being treated fair because they weren’t happy,” she admitted.

Now by “fair treatment” it’s not clear if Elise Neal is referring to her salary being fair, because in an interview for TV One’s “Life After,” series, Elise explained very bluntly that she left the show in 2005 after budget cuts decreased her salary.

She said, “The reason why I left was honestly, it was all about budget cuts.”

And Jawn Murray chimed in and explained “Apparently they asked her to take a reduced salary and Elise doesn’t play when it comes to her money. So she left the show.”

Paying people well for the job they do is definitely a part of fair treatment. So when Elise Neal says she wasn’t being treated fairly by Will and Jada because they weren’t happy themselves, she may be referring to fair pay.

The same year Elise left ‘All of Us’ she also starred in the Oscar-winning film Hustle & Flow (2005.) Elise Neal played Yvette, the supportive girlfriend of DJay (played by Terrence Howard), in the critically acclaimed 2005 film Hustle & Flow. Her role added depth to the story, portraying a woman who stands by DJay as he pursues his dream of becoming a rapper.

The film was a financial success, grossing over $23 million on a production budget of just $2.8 million(Wikipedia)(TV Insider). Hustle & Flow also went on to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song (“It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp”).

Fast forward to 2014 and Elise Neal on Hollywood Divas, which is a role that, for some strange reason, is not included on her IMDB.

Elise Neal’s time on Hollywood Divas was definitely more eventful than most people realize. While the show aimed to highlight the experiences of Black actresses navigating the ups and downs of Hollywood, it became much more intense for Elise Neal—both on and off the screen.

Elise joined the cast in 2014, expecting the show to focus on the challenges and triumphs of Black actresses in the industry. However, like with many reality TV shows, things didn’t always go as planned. Neal was vocal about the fact that she wasn’t there for petty drama.

She mentioned in interviews that she wanted the show to focus more on the real struggles Black women face in Hollywood, rather than on unnecessary fights. But, as reality TV tends to do, tensions flared, particularly between her and fellow cast member Paula Jai Parker.

Their disagreements often centered around Paula feeling disrespected in the industry, while Elise tried to offer advice. Yet, these discussions sometimes spiraled into more heated moments(Ebony)(The Hype Magazine).

However, the drama on the show wasn’t the only challenge for Elise Neal. She was also dealing with real-life consequences from an injury she sustained on set. In 2016, Neal filed a lawsuit against TV One, the network behind Hollywood Divas, claiming she had been injured during a stunt that was meant to be simple but went horribly wrong.

Elise Neal alleged that while filming, she was asked to lift a heavy object, which led to a serious injury. She claimed the production didn’t provide adequate safety measures, which ultimately left her dealing with medical expenses and pain from the injury. The lawsuit asked for compensation for the damages, as Neal felt the injury could have been avoided(Ebony)(hollywoodmask).

Elise Neal later returned to the big screen and in 2017 she played a significant role in the film Logan (2017), which was a box-office hit. It grossed approximately $619 million worldwide, with around $226 million from domestic (U.S.) ticket sales and $393 million internationally(Wikipedia)(TV Insider). This made it one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of its time.

So when they say Black actors don’t translate overseas, Elise Neal is proof that that’s just not true.

Love Life

Elise Neal has had a few public relationships that captured public attention over the years, but you can tell she keeps her love life private. One of her most well-known relationships was with rapper 50 Cent, whom she dated in the early 2000s.

Despite his macho personality, Elise described 50 Cent as “very sweet.” She said ““I’ve dated 50 Cent. He’s very sweet, very take charge. We had a cool date.” So clearly, unlike Vivica Fox, she wasn’t trying to say too much about her time with 50 Cent  (Hitberry)(Married Biography).

Elise Neal also dated rapper Rick Ross from 2010 to 2011. Their relationship reportedly ended amicably, due to their conflicting work schedules. However, after Rick Ross experienced a health scare following their breakup, Elise Neal publicly expressed concern for his well-being, explaining how his intense work commitments were affecting his health(Hitberry)(Affair Post).

Elise Neal was also engaged to filmmaker F. Gary Gray, but their relationship ultimately ended as Neal chose to prioritize her career over personal commitments. And that’s the last we’ve heard about her love life because she is such a private person.

But one thing she is very public about is her love for fitness, which is likely the reason she looks so good at almost 60 years old. Elise Neal’s fitness journey has been a central part of her life, both personally and professionally.

Over the years, Neal has become known not only for her acting talents but also for her dedication to health and wellness, particularly as she continues to maintain a youthful and fit physique well into her 50s.

Elise Neal credits her early background as a dancer for helping her stay disciplined and focused on fitness throughout her career(Affair Post). Her passion for staying in shape led her to create Elise Body Bootcamp, a fitness program she developed to share her workout routines and health tips with others.

Neal’s bootcamp focuses on helping people of all ages, particularly women, stay fit through consistent exercise and proper nutrition. She regularly shares her workouts, which include a combination of strength training and cardio, on social media, encouraging her followers to adopt a healthy lifestyle(Affair Post)(Married Biography).
