Things are getting heated between Iman Shumpert and Teyana Taylor. Recently, Iman Shumpert has requested that Teyana Taylor, his estranged wife, pay child support. This situation has turned into quite a messy public affair, with both sides making some serious allegations.
Teyana has accused Iman of cutting off utilities at their shared Georgia home, where she currently lives with their two children. She claims that he shut off the WiFi, cable, and even the water, leaving her and the kids in a tough spot. Teyana’s attorney has stated that Iman is trying to avoid his financial responsibilities, including paying Teyana child support, and paying for food and clothing for the kids.
On the flip side, Iman has argued that Teyana earns significantly more than he does. He revealed in court documents that his monthly income is around $48,000, while Teyana’s is about $100,000. Iman’s stance is that Teyana should contribute more financially due to her higher earnings.
lt’s pretty unusual for a man to request child support. In most cases, child support is typically paid by the non-custodial parent to the custodial parent. Given traditional gender roles and societal expectations, it’s often the case that mothers are the primary caregivers, so fathers end up paying child support more frequently. However, when the roles are reversed, it men obviously can request child support too. It just doesn’t seem like Iman is the custodial parent though. And Teyana has expressed safety concerns about his parenting.
According to recent court filings, Teyana claims that Iman has repeatedly demonstrated negligent behavior that endangers their kids. She has accused him of failing to provide proper meals and leaving the children unattended in potentially unsafe situations (The Source) (The Shade Room).
One of the most alarming incidents Teyana mentioned involves Iman allegedly putting their kids in a rideshare service to be dropped off at the United Center in Chicago alone, while he took a private car to the same location. So they can’t ride in a private car with him, but he can use them to file for child support.
Teyana also accuses Iman of frequently being under the influence of marijuana and sometimes alcohol while caring for the children (theJasmineBRAND) (TMZ)
. According to court documents, Teyana alleges that Iman’s jealousy and insecurity about her career success contributed to the breakdown of their relationship. She described him as a “jealous narcissist” who struggled with her growing fame, despite his own successful career in the NBA (Yahoo) (Atlanta Black Star).
Teyana mentioned that Iman would often send her condescending and manipulative text messages, showing his displeasure with her rising stardom. She even noted that he would start arguments on special occasions, like her birthday, and later apologize. These behaviors made her feel compelled to “dim her light” to maintain peace in their marriage. Despite these efforts, she claims Iman’s jealousy persisted, leading to further emotional and mental abuse (The Shade Room) (Ground News).
The tension between them was exacerbated by public events where Iman reportedly became aggravated when photographers focused on Teyana. Even when she used her connections to help him land opportunities in Hollywood as his basketball career waned, the efforts were met with arguments and further resentment (Atlanta Black Star).
This divorce has seen its fair share of drama, with both sides accusing each other of various underhanded tactics. And Iman demanding child support for children he doesn’t seem to physically care for is just the latest issue in their messy divorce.
