Rapper Common recently dropped by “The Breakfast Club” to chat about his latest project. The Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar winner has teamed up with the iconic hip-hop producer Pete Rock for his new album, diving deep into his hometown roots.
In the interview, Common shared how he “tapped into the Chicago” vibe, which is the driving force behind his new album, “The Auditorium, Vol. 1.” He emphasized how his connection to Chicago, and his relationship with fellow Chicago native Jennifer Hudson, influenced his work. Common and Hudson confirmed their relationship in January after nearly a year of speculation on her talk show.
Common has dated several notable women in the industry, including Erykah Badu, Taraji P. Henson, Serena Williams, Angela Rye, and Tiffany Haddish.
Hosts Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy, and the rest of the crew picked up on how passionately he spoke about his city and Jennifer. Common described how being with someone from his hometown helped him recharge.
“Having a lady from Chicago let me go home and truly feel at home again,” Common shared. “I could just be around my loved ones with no work pressures. Man, that really helped with this album. Going back to your roots is essential to recharge.”
As DJ Envy talked about how special Hudson seems, Common had to agree.
“With all due respect to the women I’ve dated … it’s all love, but this relationship is really healthy and beautiful,” he said. Common highlighted that there’s a unique bond with someone who shares the same background.
“There’s something special about being with someone who’s from where you’re from,” he explained. “It’s a different connection. She’s from where I’m from spiritually and geographically, and that’s something truly special.”
Common also shared what made him fall for Hudson, noting her kindness. He recalled how she bought ice cream for the cast and crew when they first met on the set of the movie “Breathe.” This gesture stood out to him because he appreciates people who treat others well.
Charlamagne Tha God hinted that Common seemed ready to marry Hudson and build a future together. Common didn’t deny it, saying, “If I’m going to get married, it’s to her. It’s as simple as that.”
When a clip of the episode was posted on the Breakfast Club’s Instagram, Tiffany Haddish was quick to comment on Common’s marriage remarks.
Haddish has been open about their breakup, saying she was in the dark about the reasons behind it. She thought things were going well before Common ghosted her around his birthday and uninvited her to his party.
